Founded in 1992 in San Diego, CA, ERISS has emerged as a global leader in ocean observation and economic research and advance a variety of targeted industries nationwide and most recently the maritime and ocean observation industries. For over 30 years, we’ve delivered rigorous, data-driven studies that inform policy, guide investment, and advance maritime and ocean observation industries worldwide.

Established as a survey and software company focused on labor market and economic studies, quickly gaining recognition for early adoption of near real-time data collection methods

2000s
National & Global Expansion

Completed projects with federal agencies, consulting firms, and global business associations, assessing labor markets and engaging employers nationwide.

Innovation in Ocean Observation

Integrated big data analytics into ocean observation research, completing landmark studies such as the first in-depth U.S. Maritime Industry labor market study and the first national  Ocean Observation Study for The National Ocean and Atmospheric  Administration (NOAA).

CEO & Co-Founder

Barbara Nyegaard, Co-Founder and CEO of ERISS, leads the company with a vision rooted in data-driven innovation and industry expertise. With decades of experience in ocean observation, economic research, and workforce development, she has guided ERISS in pioneering studies that bridge marine data collection and economic analysis. Barbara has received multiple awards for her leadership, including recognition from the City of San Diego, California Businesswoman of the Year, and the Congressional Medal of Distinction.
